Selina Reid

For Selina Reid, Health, Physical Education, and Recreation instructor, work encompasses a little more than advising students to eat their fruits and veggies. While also chairing her department and serving as the institution’s assistant athletic director, she gives insight on the multidisciplinary approach of HPER to guide students through the academic map of their chosen career path.

“I absolutely enjoy teaching students basic first aid skills, various preventive medicine tactics, the importance of engaging in regular physical activities, and establishing healthier eating habits to enhance their quality of life,” Reid expressed.

Additionally, the Rienzi, Mississippi, native chairs Coahoma’s Athletic Hall of Fame Selection Committee. Reid spent 12 years of her 14-year tenure as an adjunct instructor teaching online and face-to-face courses.

She hugely appreciates former CCC president Dr. Vivian Presley for hiring her as the first full-time certified athletic trainer for the College and trusting her with the role of assistant athletic director. Sports and fitness have made up a large chunk of her life. From physical education classes and little league basketball in elementary school to backyard sports of badminton, volleyball, sandlot football, kickball and organized sports of taekwondo and church league softball, there was no such thing as separating herself from a mobile lifestyle.

Reid accepted a four-year basketball scholarship to Blue Mountain College, earning a Bachelor of Science in biology/chemistry with a minor in physical education in 1998. She also has a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance with a concentration in athletic training from The University of Tennessee at Martin. Expanding her knowledge, she attained a Master of Education in health, physical education, and recreation from Delta State University in 2007. Reid has received a certification from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, a Performance Enhancement Specialist certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and multiple Quality Matters certifications, including the Applying the QM Rubric certification.

In 2011, Michigan-based magazine Training and Conditioning interviewed her for bringing together high school coaches to host a sports medicine symposium at Coahoma.

At Biggersville High School in Corinth, Mississippi, Reid was a member of the National Beta Club and lettered in basketball, softball, and track and field.

Regarding her selection as the faculty member of the month, she says, “I am humbly grateful to be selected during my first year serving as department chair and an instructor of HPER because Coahoma Community College is equipped with extraordinary faculty.”

An optimist, Reid advises others to never fear failure and never give up as life is a learning process. Success comes after mastering the lessons, she shares.

The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority member has been married to Charles F. Reid Jr. for about 16 years and parents a pair of teenagers, Nyla and Nyles. While her children motivate her to give her best effort daily despite life's challenges, she, in turn, hopes to be an inspiring figure to them that they will conquer life's challenges with a smile. Her grandmother, who taught her to let God order her footsteps, has been an endearing influence.

Reid says that she is blessed to be a part of Tiger Nation. In her opinion, Coahoma’s rich history and student-centered approach, which she says, has given so many an opportunity to succeed in life, make it an amazing place.

“I am loving the progress Coahoma has made and is still making, from transportation upgrades and campus facilities upgrades to providing new courses and programs in addition to continuous improvements in athletics,” she expressed.

Linda Robinson

Linda Robinson is recognized as the staff member of the month for her outstanding performance as Coahoma’s Testing Services coordinator.

Robinson has reached 18 years of service at Coahoma Community College. She is certified to administer GED options, the HiSET and Pearson VUE exams, as well as the ACCUPLACER, which examines a student’s standing to determine their course placement. Giving her skills back to her hometown of Clarksdale, two of the most pleasant parts about her role is being able to uplift students and serve as a light that guides students toward realizing their full potential.

"Oftentimes, when students report to the testing center, they are nervous," she said. She tells students who show up lacking confidence with the look of doubt on their face that with a can-do attitude, they will reach their destination every time.

Her mother, the late Emma L. Bolton, who was her "biggest cheerleader," is the reason for her instinct for encouraging others and her ability to stay the course. "She stated that, 'No matter what you are faced with, let God be your outcome,'" Robinson reflected.

Robinson carries a Bachelor of Arts in sociology, a master’s in criminal justice, and an Education Specialist degree in educational leadership. She has also completed studies at the United States Army Adjutant General Administrative School. She is the proud parent of 16-year-old Kaitlin Robinson.

The lover of reading, meditating, and biking describes Coahoma Community College as an affordable institution with a beautiful HBCU campus.

She quotes John Wesley in sharing a life-guiding principle, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as you ever can.”

The impact one makes on a person’s life makes a lasting impression, she says.
