On November 15, the 2023-2024 Coahoma Community College Student Government Association (SGA) officers were officially pinned in front of family, friends, and a proud campus community. The ceremony took place in the Zee A. Barron Student Union and these students were officiated as campus leaders. This is an annual event of Coahoma and a tradition that acts as a rite of passage in SGA history.
Dr. Rolanda Brown, Dean of Academics, served as the guest speakers for this ceremony and shared “What a valuable leader is” as words of encouragement for these scholars.
“Make the most out of this experience. This is a pivotal moment in your lives and you now have the opportunity to represent your fellow students and the college. You are now the face of the and the voice of Coahoma Community College,” said Brown.
The students of Coahoma Community College elected this group of SGA members to advocate for the student body. Each member of the organization has their dedicated role to improving the Coahoma experience for students. The student-led group ensures that students voices are heard.
Continuing her speech, Brown ensures students to take advantage of the relationships that students will build by having this distinguished honor. She also talked to the students about her experience of being a leader on campus, being committed to this position, and relates it back to their campus duties.
“Your job as a leader is to ensure that the voice of student is heard and considered, which is something you all should take pride in,” said Brown.
Brown concludes her speech by breaking down the word leader, its origin, and relates it to real life experiences. She talks about great leaders in pass time and encourages students that great leaders serve and show other students the proper way to lead.
“Be yourself leaders! Be strong, be brave, and be the face of the college; but still be you. Good leaders are authentic!”
Sophomore, Breana Fields, who serves as the Vice President of the SGA from Greenville, MS, is thrilled to be a part of the SGA and shares her excitement of the pinning ceremony.
“This is a rewarding experience and I feel truly honored to represent our student body. I hope to bring more awareness to the campus about moving forward because most students do not know their options after graduating CCC,” said Fields.
Fields also hopes to see some of her bright ideas and implementations come to life for the institution next semester.
President, Dr. Valmadge T. Towner made closing remarks and congratulated the group for their achievement. He shared how this is a massive deal to the students and teaches them the importance of development in leadership.
“This moment is very meaningful to you all because it adds value to your life. We are glad to be a part of your journey of development. Leaders of this college want to pour life into you and make sure you achieve all of your goals,” said Towner.
Towner concluded the event by thanking student for choosing Coahoma Community College.
