FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Coahoma Community College (CCC) Unites for the 2023 Counselor's Retreat: "Bridging The Gap- From One Counselor to Another"

On September 20, CCC gathered in the Gallery on its campus to host the much-anticipated 2023 Counselor's Retreat, emphasizing the theme "Bridging The Gap- From One Counselor to Another."

This engaging one-day event was meticulously crafted to facilitate meaningful interactions with high school counselors from the five surrounding counties. CCC is committed to nurturing positive relationships, fostering collaboration, and enhancing team dynamics within the counselor community. The invitations for this event were extended through emails, phone calls, and personal communication, ensuring a diverse and dynamic participation.

The central objective of this retreat is to strengthen connections with the counselors and equip them with essential information about CCC. Participants will gain insights into our educational institution's core values, unique offerings, as well as the wealth of resources and opportunities available to high school students.

BUtler Tolernisa Butler, the Education Outreach Director at CCC, spearheaded the Counselor's Retreat and underlined the significance of this gathering not only for CCC but for the broader educational landscape.

"As we move forward, this retreat prepares high school counselors to collaborate closely with their college counterparts, ensuring a seamless transition for students from one educational institution to another," noted Butler. "I am confident that, together, we can work towards the shared objective of student success."

Butler's vision for CCC hinges on school counselors continuing to champion college opportunities, readiness, and, ultimately, student achievement.

Tamara Washington-Travis, the Director of Adult Education at CCC, also addressed the counselors, offering valuable insights on supporting students who may have encountered challenges in their academic journey. Tamara Washington Travis 23

"We enlightened the counselors about our diverse range of programs, which encompass Adult Education High School Equivalency/GED prep classes, Smart Start employability skills courses, NCRC (National Career Readiness Certificate), and MIBEST (dual enrollment of Adult Education classes and an approved CTE program)," Travis explained.

Travis emphasized that life's unforeseen circumstances sometimes lead students to depart from the traditional high school setting. However, CCC stands ready to provide a second chance for these individuals to pursue their educational and workforce aspirations. She also drew attention to Adult Education & Family Literacy (AEFL) Week and its purpose.

"AEFL Week serves as a platform to raise awareness about the pivotal role of adult education and family literacy programs, such as the ones offered here at Coahoma Community College," Travis articulated. "Access to education has the transformative power to reshape the lives of individuals in our region and drive economic development in our communities."

AEFL Week is a nationwide initiative aimed at promoting adult education and family literacy while celebrating the remarkable achievements of these programs in our campus and communities.

CCC's Adult Education and Educational Outreach programs are consistently exploring innovative ways to disseminate information about the diverse opportunities available through our program. We remain committed to enhancing access to education and empowering individuals to achieve their full potential.
