Coahoma Community College announced Wednesday that the institution's October 24th Homecoming game against Mississippi Delta Community College (MDCC) has been canceled.

The two Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference north teams discussed the risks of playing the contest amid COVID concerns on the MDCC campus, specifically surrounding the football program. Ultimately, the decision was made to cancel the game in the best interest of public health.

CCC Athletic Director Reggy Hankerson thinks this is a wise move and says that both institution's campus communities' health and safety was the determining factor in making the decision.

"Due to these unfortunate circumstances, it was decided to cancel our Homecoming game against Mississippi Delta Community College," said Hankerson. "MDCC informed us of COVID concerns and that they would not be participating in the game. I agree with that decision and think this is the best move for both institutions."

Coahoma Community College does plan on continuing with a week of festivities—A Celebration of Tigers. Many of the scheduled events for the "Coahoma Forever" Homecoming week celebration, taking place October 19-23, will still take place. Some events, times, and dates are subject to change. Interested individuals are encouraged to stay tuned to official Coahoma Community College communication channels for the latest news and updates.

Karen Woods-Done, director of the Division of Student Engagement, sees this as an opportunity to still engage the CCC campus community, alumni, supporters, and friends.

"Though it's unfortunate, the health of our students is paramount, and the cancellation of the Homecoming game is what was needed," said Done. "We will, however, continue with a week of activities—A Celebration of Tigers. The weeklong event will have activities that will entertain, engage, and support our various constituent groups. There will be something for everyone in Tiger Nation."
